Is it required that you serve alcohol durning an afternoon semi formal lunch / anniversary party

40th wedding anniversary lot's of MD's will attend. 2 pm lunch semi formal with a slide show. Do we need to have beer and wine?

Is it required to serve alcohol at the party? It is an interesting dilemma...

At many formal parties, alcohol is usually offered and so there is an "unwritten" expectation to serve alcohol.

However, I think you will be fine if you do not serve alcohol. What makes the difference?

Because this is a party that is done over a lunch and not dinner. When a party is done over lunch, many people will be returning to work or driving after the party. With that in mind, serving alcohol is actually inappropriate for this type of event.
