80th Birthday Gift
by: Wendy (Modern Manners and Etiquette)
Thank you for your question!
An 80th Birthday is a wonderful milestone in a person's life! It is nice that you will be able to celebrate with them and others at a party.
I know when my Grandmother turned 80, finding a present for her was difficult. By that time in her life she had every little trinket she wanted and so many clothes she had to put them in 2 different closets.
A monetary gift is a wonderful idea. This will allow them to use it for whatever they need, or would like. As for a set amount, there is not one.
There are some factors you could take into consideration. Where is this person at financially in their lives? If they are in need, then a generous gift is very much appreciated. My husband's Grandmother always benefited from her generous children and grandchildren. She was by not means rich and needed the extra help. It was a fun way to do it.
Are you pitching in for the dinner celebration? This would be factored into the amount you decide to give.
At the end of the day, you need to look at where you are financially and see how much you are comfortable giving. As it comes from your heart it will be most appreciated.
